What might make a distributor decide to release a film on one particular weekend rather than another?
Distributors makes sure that a film doesn't get release on a date where another big film is being show since there could be a clash and then could leave others to go to one instead of the one they are distributing.

PDE

PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION,MARKETING AND EXHIBITION OF A FILM
Production
Pre-production
There is pre-production which is where the planning for the project happens. During this period the production is broken down into individual scenes and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are distinguished. Sometimes the script isn't complete so they will complete it at this stage if they haven't already. Normally there will be a detailed schedule is produced and the arrangements are created for necessary elements, which are to be available for the film makers at the right appropriate time.

Production
This is the stage which the actual filming happens. All scenes already planned out in the pre-production part are filmed and the relevant locations. Each scene is filmed as many times as the director wants, so that they make sure the scenes are to their best ability and also quality. this is where the pre-production stage is put to the test. They have to make sure that all the filming is done correctly and all shots are taken , this because it can be very difficult to go back and repeat certain scenes.
Post-production
This is the stage which the film is put together by the editor. The editor does a rough cut taken from sequences. The purpose of the rough cut is to order the best shots. Then create fine cuts by getting all the shots to flow quite smooth in a seamless way. Trimming is the process where the scenes are shortened by minutes, seconds or frames. As well as editing footage, adding all music, graphics, menus are all added. After the fine cut has been screened and approved by the director and producer, the film is then locked which means no more changes can be made.
